July 28 - Aug 18

GENRE:   Fiction - Coming of Age

It is June 1979, and school is out for the summer! Having just turned ten years old, Shane Anderson is your typical fun-loving kid who just moved from the suburbs to the city. Sure, he likes to exit the same door he entered. And he likes turning lights on and off an even number of times. And he has to keep scary movie scenes out of his head at bedtime. But apart from that (and maybe a few other things), he's just a normal guy with a musical mom, a semi-hippie dad and the coolest sister around. Join him as he experiences many notable adventures against the backdrop of toys, tunes, TV shows and new-found friends.

Excerpt

“The handkerchief, please,” I said.

Soon, I could not see anything. I held the megaphone to my lips and started to count:

“One!” I exclaimed.

Megaphones were definitely my friend.

“Two!” I continued, all the way up to fifty. I then ripped off the handkerchief and yelled, “Reeeeeeady or not, heeeeeeeeere I come!”

I switched into seeker mode. I had not been a seeker yet in this complex, so it felt like a fresh experience. I found Mindy in the bushes first, then someone I did not know behind a barbeque. I wasn’t aware we could go onto someone’s property, but I guess we could. One by one, I found and tagged everyone except three people, including Jonathan. With Jonathan still at large, anything could happen. Where could he have gone? I searched for what seemed like a long time, with no luck. I stood in place for a bit, put my hand to my chin, and thought about his whereabouts.

Then I heard a branch break above me. Jonathan was in the tree! Doing my best Stretch Armstrong impression, I reached up to tag him but he climbed higher. I knew what I had to do. I quickly changed to climber mode and started to scale the tree, trying to avoid the sticky sap clumps along the way. Jonathan knew he could not go too high because I would tag him eventually. His only way out was to jump from the tree, and that is precisely what he did.

I was quick to follow. I landed on my feet then slipped backwards and hit my back hard on the grassy ground below me. I couldn’t breathe! Not one single breath. I got up off the ground, both stunned and scared. Jonathan could tell I was struggling and ran toward me. All I could keep thinking was: I am going to die by hide-and-seek!

This is a fun coming of age story filled with 1970s references of popular music, sitcoms, books, and movies which I loved. Having grown up in the 80s, I am nostalgic for the simpler times of the past. I enjoyed every minute of this transport back to the summer of 1979 when life was less chaotic, more laid back, and engaged with our communities.

This book was a quick read with well-developed and loveable characters dealing with coming-of-age topics while taking the reader on one adventure after another. I highly recommend this book to those who love a good story filled with classic American culture.

I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you Corey Wainman and Goddess Fish Promotions. I'm excited to be a part of this tour.
