Although she can’t recall committing the crime, she feels strongly that she did the right thing. In the hopes of jogging her memory and healing her soul, Stormy is tasked with writing her autobiography as part of her rehabilitation.

Spanning the 1940s to 2026, and set in the Saskatchewan prairies, Olympia, Greece, and Canada’s West Coast, For Love and Mercy follows the lives of free-spirited Evangeline, and Stormy herself—including a near-death experience that changes everything.

In For Love and Mercy, we meet 42-year-old, Dr. Stormy Herra (former music professor at the University of Victoria). She currently serving a sentence for manslaughter at the Sunnydale Forensic Hospital in British Columbia. She doesn’t remember committing the crime, yet her gut tells her she did the right thing. Part of her therapy is to write her autobiography taking the reader from 1940-2026, set in the Saskatchewan prairies, Olympia, Greece, and finally Canada’s West Coast.

While writing her autobiography, Stormy explores the lives of her and her mother. The characters are well-written, and the story is beautifully written. The realism of this fictional story had me wondering if it was a true story – it’s that good! The author does an excellent job of weaving multiple storylines while creating an engaging and suspenseful family drama.

I really enjoy that the story is written as a true-crime fiction aspects and was engaged from start to finish. This book is fully of twists you won’t see coming and brings to life themes of love, loss, natural consequences, and the role mental health plays in these.

I highly recommend this book, it’s perfect for anyone who enjoys historical fiction combined with family soap opera. I look forward to reading more from this author!
