In Mother Knows Worst we meet Rose, who after failing as an actress decides to change careers and go to law school. She enrolls in law school in sleepy New England. Rose is 30-something, Italian, and quirky and falls in love the moment she sees Anil, a handsome intellectual from India.

They have a deep connection, and their relationship quickly becomes romantic. Their future looks bright, they have a solid relationship, great friends, and Anil’s mother. What could possibly go wrong?

Inspired by true events, Mother Knows Worst is both funny and heartfelt as Rose finds herself, love, and relationships as she explores two cultures colliding.

I was drawn to this book based on the synopsis. Younger versions of myself wanted to be an actor and lawyer at one point. Ironically, I am neither. I also had a mother-in-law once who was extraordinarily patient with me. This book is an honest look at the complex relationships created by marriage. While reading this book, I couldn’t help but think of how much harder my adjustment to “married life” would have been has she been like Anil’s mother.

The characters are well developed and filled with their own inner complexities. Anil’s mother is not my favorite character. I found myself wanting her to be a little more flexible. I felt empathy toward Rose when Anil’s mother unwittingly undermines her happiness. The cultural aspects were fascinating to me, I enjoy learning about different cultures and the psychological aspects of merging them.

Overall, this is a solid story. Having said that I do agree with other reviewers that the end felt unfinished. I hope this means a sequel is coming as I look forward to reading more from this author.
