Having gone through my own cancer journey, I was drawn to this book. As many of you know, I was diagnosed with early-stage Breast Cancer almost two years. While my cancer was caught early and was not life threatening, I think once you are diagnosed with cancer it’s akin to being initiated into a club no one wants to belong to. It also brings anxiety of recurrence or diagnosis of another kind. I turned to this book to better understand how to cope with life post cancer and to learn the skills to support others going through a terminal cancer diagnosis.

Life Interrupted: Dr. Dua’s Survival Guide by Dr. Manu Dua is a powerful and inspiring memoir that offers a unique perspective on facing life’s most challenging moments. Written by Dr. Dua, a dentist who was diagnosed with stage IV cancer, this book is both a poignant reflection on his personal journey and a practical guide for others navigating similar struggles.

Dr. Dua's writing is raw and honest, capturing the emotional highs and lows of his battle with cancer. He shares his fears, hopes, and the moments of clarity that come with confronting one’s mortality. Despite the gravity of his situation, Dr. Dua’s narrative is filled with wisdom, resilience, and a keen sense of gratitude for life. His reflections on the importance of living fully, even in the face of adversity, are deeply moving and his words have stuck with me.

The book is divided into sections that address different aspects of coping with illness, including emotional, physical, and spiritual challenges. Dr. Dua provides practical advice on maintaining a positive outlook while managing pain and discomfort. He speaks of the need to find meaning and purpose amid hardship. His guidance is not only relevant to those facing serious illness but also to anyone coping with life's unpredictably.

Published posthumously, Life Interrupted is a testament to the human spirit's strength, the power of hope, and perseverance. Dr. Dua's candid storytelling combined with compassionate advice make this book an invaluable resource for anyone seeking comfort, understanding, and inspiration during life’s most difficult times. It’s a poignant reminder to cherish each moment and live life to the fullest, no matter the circumstances.

Book Description:

This is the story of my younger brother, Dr. Manu Dua, who battled oral cancer for almost two years.

These are a series of blogs that he penned when faced with his own mortality at the young age of 34. He had accepted and made peace with his fate. These blogs are filled with much depth and wisdom. It chronicles his realization of life and what and who truly matters.

May these blogs serve as a gentle reminder to not take life for granted. That no matter what we plan, things are out of our control, call it our fate or destiny. That through the darkest of times, there is still hope, and the power of the human spirit through adversities prevails.

May you find comfort in his words should you or your loved ones walk this difficult road.
